Our Healing Services

At Crossings we rely on the wisdom of traditional healing systems to cultivate your own natural healing response: recover the daily rhythms of your body; restore the balance of your mind and emotions; engage your vital spirit.

We serve people who seek to recover from illness, pain or trauma as well as those who seek to sustain or enrich their wellness. If you are experiencing a physical or an emotional disharmony, or if you are seeking to enhance your life experience, we invite you to consider Crossings for a natural approach to healing. We approach our work from a holistic perspective, treating you as whole person. You will find our holistic methods an ideal complement to any conventional medical treatment:

Acupuncture

More people in the history of the world have been treated by acupuncture than any other form of medicine. Acupuncture is useful for many modern-day concerns, as it has the ability to touch the body, the mind and the spirit. In any one day, a Crossings acupuncturist may support the healing of a frozen shoulder or painful back in one client; next treat a child with learning disabilities or an adult with memory problems; and later serve someone who is looking for a deeper sense of connection with themselves as a spiritual being.

Acupuncturists help restore and balance energy, or “qi (pronounced “chee”) by tending particular points on your body with hair-thin sterile, disposable needles and a nourishing herb called moxa. When our qi is abundant and flowing smoothly, our possibilities for healing are maximized – we sleep well, awaken restored, move through our day and our emotions without chronic pain or discomfort and enjoy richer, more harmonious relationships.

Acupuncture patients report lower medical costs overall — they don’t get sick as often, make more effective use of their physicians, need fewer prescription drugs, have less need for surgery, feel little or no pain, and have the stamina to meet the challenges life presents.

Your first visit with a Crossings’ acupuncturist will consist of an in-depth conversation and a physical examination. How many treatments will you need? It varies widely. Recent, acute injuries or complaints are often resolved in a few treatments. Longer-term, chronic concerns may take longer – perhaps one month of treatment for every year you have experienced your concern.  After a presenting complaint is resolved, many choose to come in for treatment once a season to enjoy acupuncture’s health maintenance and life enhancement qualities.

Our acupuncturists are licensed by the Maryland State Board of Acupuncture, and hold Master’s Degree in Acupuncture from the TAI Sophia Institute or the College of Traditional Acupuncture in the U.K.

Herbal Medicine and Bach Flower Essences

Crossings is pleased to offer Chinese Herbal consultation in conjunction with acupuncture.  Two of our acupuncturists are certified in Chinese Herbs from the TAI Sophia Institute.  They are:

In addition, one of our massage therapists/bodyworkers  is a Bach Flower Essence educator. Dr. Edward Bach, an English medical doctor who developed the Flower Essences in the early 1930's, observed that when people feel positive and happy, they tend to enjoy better health. The 38 Bach Flower Essences are homeopathically prepared plant and flower based formulas that assist and support our efforts to function emotionally in a more balanced way. They can help us manage the stresses and emotional demands of everyday life by bringing negative attitudes, feelings and reaction patterns back into balance and perspective. The use of the Bach Flower Essences is a self-help natural healing system that is guided by the practitioner in an educational consultation format.

At Crossings, we appreciate that people seek out massage and bodywork with varied needs, interests and expectations.  Our hope is that the following descriptions of techniques, combined with the cross-referenced staff bios, will help you find a practitioner who is a good match for you. We also encourage you to contact practitioners directly to discuss your questions and concerns.

Crossings has a variety of practitioners to meet the interests of a range of clients – from those wanting a relaxing, nurturing respite, on one end of the continuum, to those seeking relief from acute or chronic pain.

Despite differences in training and background, we share certain common principles in our work.  We recognize that human beings are a unified whole and that any form of physical and/or energetic touch has the capacity to affect body, mind and spirit.  Our orientation, then, is to support clients towards greater wholeness within themselves (versus a narrow focus on symptoms, or "fixing broken parts").  In our daily work, we witness and support the resiliency of the human body and spirit – our capacity to change, and to live with more ease, less pain and limitations, and a greater sense of well-being.

Medical Consultation

Today’s health care is often fragmented. It is unusual when there is one provider who knows everything about a patient’s care.  Medical consultation, grounded in the art of attentive listening, provides an evaluation of the whole picture. Missing information, conflicting treatments, and what works best for the individual is explored. You are given the opportunity to tell your story and be heard.

As a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Practitioner with 17 years experience in a variety of medical settings, Gail Chinoy, RNC, MSN, is able to offer assistance and guidance to help people with:

  • Navigating the health care system;
  • Explaining or exploring a diagnosis, test result, symptom or course of treatment;
  • Referrals to appropriate health care providers;
  • Combining the best of traditional and alternative medicine;
  • Making choices about care during the perimenopausal and menopausal years

After gathering information about the reason for the consultation in person or over the phone, an appointment is made. The length of the first appointment is 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the content of the consultation. The individual is then given a written summary of recommendations. Follow-up appointments are made as needed.

Nutrition Counseling

Experience a whole food, whole person approach that blends Eastern and Western traditions of food for healing.

Many of us know that we need to be making better food choices, and many of us even know what food choices would be positive for our health, but almost all of us could use more guidance with the how part – how to implement realistic, lasting changes that work with our lifestyles and belief systems, with the real world. Working in partnership with a nutrition counselor allows you to develop the skills you need to improve your health and create greater overall balance in your life.

This collaborative non-judgmental approach will help you:

  • address your health concerns through a whole foods-centered diet tailored to your individual needs;
  • increase your awareness around the energetics of food (not just the science of nutrients) and your own individual physiological and psychological responses to foods;
  • explore ways to create more balance in the way you live, with special attention not only to your relationship with food, but also to exercise, work, relationships, creativity, spirituality; and,
  • experience and learn stress reduction techniques to enhance well-being and support your immune system.

Through nutrition counseling you can develop habits that will keep you healthy for the duration of your life because preventative care is always preferable to waiting for an illness to manifest and then trying to tame it. Good nutrition also supports the body through chronic and acute illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, as well as digestive disorders, fatigue, pre-natal, pregnancy, & post-natal health concerns, a wide range of women's reproductive health issues, weight challenges, and disordered eating patterns such as depriving yourself of food or bingeing, or both.

To make an appointment for an initial consultation, you may speak with the receptionist at Crossings at 301-565-4924, or leave a message for Ed at extension 311.

Physical Therapy

This traditional Western medicine discipline takes on a totally new and intensive approach to helping people find ease inside themselves. At Crossings, every session is spent entirely with one client. There are no multiple client treatments and no unassisted exercise routines. Each session lasts 45 to 60 minutes and is steeped in a vast background of manual therapies which address skeletal, muscular, visceral, energetic, and most hard and soft tissue systems within the body. Our manual therapies include: Joint Mobilization, Muscle Energy Techniques, Myofascial Release, Craniosacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, and Huma Bodywork, Integrative Manual Therapy and Neuro Developmental Technique.

Physical Therapy at Crossings is an experience that meets each client's situation with discerning touch, empathic listening, and a sense of partnership with the client.

Our two physical therapists, Barbara Glenfield and Lynne Gist have over 45 years of combined experience in manual physical therapy. It is their belief that with deep listening, a trust-filled environment, and exquisitely skilled touch that healing potential is accessed. We hold this path for each client.
